Students can read the dialog and then hear an audio file of the conversation. Note: You can’t hear and read simultaneously so you might want to print the dialog first. "This content teaches Japanese language and culture through the experiences of an expatriate family newly transferred to Tokyo. Learning is based on serialized lessons showing everyday experiences of a high school senior, Jason Miller, and his parents from Seattle, Washington. As Jason and his parents meet new friends, neighbors, teachers and business associates, more information will be provided to viewers about life, culture and Japanese history." Excellent JAPANESE POETRY: TANKA? YOU’RE WELCOME! – LESSON PLAN NEW! http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=399A lesson plan on Japanese poetry for grades 9-12. "Japanese poetry, with its demands on intuition and strict discipline of structure, content, restraint, and subtlety, can sometimes confound a Western audience. Difficulty lies in translating the concept of the on, or Japanese sound unit. Japanese forms often demand a specific number of on, characters or sound units, which Westerners erroneously equate to syllables. The evolution of the structures of Japanese make them complex, and Western audiences, accustomed to meter, rhythm, and form, prefer to reduce poetry to its simplest terms. This unit on the Japanese tanka encourages students to explore the structure and content of the form and to arrive at a definition of the structure in English." Excellent LA FAMILIA – LESSON PLAN NEW! http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=306A lesson plan for grades K-2 on beginning Spanish. "Even very young students know, and may occasionally use, words that are Spanish in origin — rodeo, tortilla, lasso, and macho, to name a few. And many are able to count from 1 to 10 in Spanish, due in large part to early exposure to the language provided by children's television programming. This sense of familiarity with Spanish, combined with the excellent language acquisition skills possessed by students in this age group, will help make this unit on Spanish culture an exciting but comfortable experience for your class. Students will learn about families in various Spanish cultures and gain a preliminary knowledge of the Spanish language, learning the Spanish names for various family members." Excellent THE LANGUAGE BANK – LESSON PLAN

They consist of student-centered activities designed to support language development as students explore culturally relevant themes using authentic, contextualized target-language texts, audio/video, theatre, Web sites, and other media. Developed by Texas teachers of LOTE, these scenarios begin with high interest topics that stimulate creativity and encourage divergent thinking. Many of the activities through which the topics are explored provide options to address differentiated learning styles, multiple intelligences, and individual teaching styles. Teachers are encouraged to review all of the scenarios, not just the ones for the language(s) they teach. Many of the themes are universal, and activities may be modified to address issues particular to a given language and culture."
