In this method, small mixed groups of native speakers of two languages spend half the time speaking in one language and half the time in the other language. Activities are structured to ensure all areas of language acquisition are exercised such as vocabulary, pronunciation and listening comprehension. In addition, the activities in the Cormier method are designed to enable students to discover the "conversation culture" - how native speakers of the other culture interact. The method relies on ensuring the students have fun and are relaxed to make language practice more enjoyable and therefore more effective."

CHARLES BAUDELAIRE: POÊTE MAUDIT (THE CURSED POET) – LESSON PLAN         NEW!
    http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=389
A lesson plan for grades 9-12 on French poet Baudelaire. "This lesson introduces students of French and World Literature to the life and works of Charles Baudelaire, a 19th-century French Symbolist poet who was a fervent admirer of Poe. Though Baudelaire's greatest literary success during his life was a translation of Poe, the depths of despair and horror he achieves in his poetry far outdistances Poe's investigations into the macabre. Twenty-first-century students will be intrigued to discover they have a mid-19th-century kindred spirit in Baudelaire, the most prominent member of the Symbolist movement. Students will relate to the Symbolist penchant for wallowing in themes of death and depravity as well as share the Symbolist view that no one understands the torture of what it is to be alone against the universe. None of the Symbolists more thoroughly depict the bohemian side of life or elevate the morbid more effectively than Baudelaire in his scandalous masterwork, Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil)." http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=279
A lesson plan for grades 9-12 on France and French culture. "Have students work in pairs to produce an English-language guide to the resources linked with the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) website. This will involve browsing the site itself and following the links it offers through several levels in order to assess and fully describe what is available. The exercise offers significant practice in reading French and opportunities to encounter the language in a wide range of applications, from the world of finance to that of popular music. Student guides can take the form of a "top ten" catalog, with full translations from the sites they find most fascinating, an indication of the level of French language proficiency needed to enjoy each site, and some suggestions for how students might use each one. To produce a more comprehensive student guide to French-related resources on the Internet, assign each pair of students a specific subject area -- literature, politics, cuisine, film, etc. -- so that their reports can become chapters in a collaborative project." JAPANESE POETRY: TANKA? YOU’RE WELCOME! – LESSON PLAN NEW!

    http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=399

A lesson plan on Japanese poetry for grades 9-12. "Japanese poetry, with its demands on intuition and strict discipline of structure, content, restraint, and subtlety, can sometimes confound a Western audience. Difficulty lies in translating the concept of the on, or Japanese sound unit. Japanese forms often demand a specific number of on, characters or sound units, which Westerners erroneously equate to syllables. The evolution of the structures of Japanese make them complex, and Western audiences, accustomed to meter, rhythm, and form, prefer to reduce poetry to its simplest terms. This unit on the Japanese tanka encourages students to explore the structure and content of the form and to arrive at a definition of the structure in English." Excellent

LA FAMILIA – LESSON PLAN NEW!

And many are able to count from 1 to 10 in Spanish, due in large part to early exposure to the language provided by children's television programming. This sense of familiarity with Spanish, combined with the excellent language acquisition skills possessed by students in this age group, will help make this unit on Spanish culture an exciting but comfortable experience for your class. Students will learn about families in various Spanish cultures and gain a preliminary knowledge of the Spanish language, learning the Spanish names for various family members." Excellent
