'First Motion Picture Unit', or F.M.P.U., the unit was formed in
1942 as the 18th Air Force Base Unit of the U.S. Army Air Corps,
to produce training films, morale films, and propaganda films.
The operation was eventually located at Hal Roach Studios in
Culver City, California, which was called 'Fort Roach'; the
abbreviation F.M.P.U. was/is pronounced 'fum-poo'.
Soon after the United States was
propelled into active engagement in World War II, General 'Hap'
Arnold, then head of the Army Air Force, saw the need to make
films for training and for morale & propaganda, and he asked
Warner Bros. studio head Jack L. Warner for help. Warner took
Owen Crump with him to Washington DC, and the deal was struck.
The first F.M.P.U. production,
"Winning Your Wings", was made at Warner's studio in Burbank, for
the purpose of getting much-needed enlistments; the short film
was released theatrically in May 1942, and is credited with

military campaigns—on land and sea, and in the air—all
contributed to the war's successful conclusion." Contains four

NEW!
http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=748
A curriculum unit for grades 9-12 on animosity
between the U.S. and Japan beginning in World War I and leading
to the attack on Pearl Harbor. "In this four-lesson
curriculum unit, students begin by exploring through contemporary
documents the rise of animosity between the United States and
Japan beginning in World War I and continuing over the next two
decades . They consider next through primary source documents and
an interactive timeline the overall principles which underlay
both Japanese and American foreign policy in the mid- to
late-1930. Students turn then to examine through primary
documents and maps why Japan embarked on its policy of aggression
against China, also considering the U.S. response to this new
policy, and how it contributed to war between the United States
and Japan. Finally they are asked to put themselves in the shoes
of U.S. and Japanese diplomats in the final months of 1941,
desperately trying to reach a settlement that will avoid war.
Through the use of primary documents and an interactive map and
timeline, they will consider whether there was any reasonable
chance of preventing the outbreak of World War II in the
Pacific." Contains four lessons. Excellent

THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE: FROM NEUTRALITY
TO WAR 1921-1941 – CURRICULUM UNIT NEW!
http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=753
A curriculum unit for grades 9-12 on the U.S.
involvement in World War II. "The question of how involved
the United States should become in the European war deeply
divided the country. On the one hand, Roosevelt and the so-called
"internationalists" claimed that a program of aid to Great
Britain and other countries fighting against Germany would make
actual U.S. participation in the war unnecessary. On the other
side stood those who were called "isolationists," who believed
that the president's policies were making it increasingly likely
that the country would end up in another disastrous foreign war.
This debate was still raging when Japanese aircraft attacked
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. At this point it was clear
that, like it or not, the United States would be a full
participant in the Second World War." Contains four
lessons. Excellent

A lesson plan using original documents for
grades 9 and up on British attempts to maintain the support of
the people of West Africa. "Propaganda is information that
is spread to promote a cause. During World War Two, Britain
and her allies fought against Germany and the axis powers in a
war which took place on land and sea in many parts of the world.
Both sides made use of propaganda to try and win support from
other countries.
Britain was keen to keep the support of the
colonies in her Empire, including those in West Africa, and sent
propaganda leaflets like the one in this lesson to try and help
win their support." Excellent

carefully looked after? Once they were there, were they
abandoned, or were they monitored? How much care was taken?
Examine the official government documents and records to find
