By thinking about and participating in some simulated sedimentary processes, children will be able to remove much of the mystery behind fossils and fossilization. These exercises introduce the concept that fossils are remains or traces of ancient living things. They will also begin to think about how rare an event fossilization is." Excellent

FOSSILS AND DINOSAURS – LESSON PLAN
http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/Lessons.cfm?DocID=93
A lesson plan for grades 3-5 on fossils and dinosaurs. "In the first part of the lesson, students will discuss what we know about horses. They will then do the same for a Stegosaurus. This comparison is subtle, but demonstrates what we know as fact and what we know as theory, and more importantly, what sort of proof scientists need for fact to exist. As students discuss the Stegosaurus, they will realize that fossils tell a story about the animal. They describe facts, i.e. how tall, how wide, what kind of teeth, and they describe ideas, i.e. what the dino may have eaten, how fast it may have moved due to its leg structure, and how it may have hunted. Once students have an understanding of how to extrapolate facts and ideas from fossils, they will do some of their own digging in the second part of this lesson to practice using the thinking skills they've obtained." Excellent

FOSSILS AND GEOLOGIC TIME – LESSON PLAN             NEW!
http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/lessons.cfm?DocID=44

Using careful analogies and written historical records, the authors help students understand the development of the geologic time scale, including how this depended on gathering evidence and making comparisons. The major time periods in earth's history are introduced, as well as are fossils and the role they play in helping us understand this history." Excellent

FOSSILS – LESSON PLAN
http://ofcn.org/cyber.serv/academy/ace/sci/cecsci/cecsci049.html
A lesson plan for grades 1-2 in which students create and study fossils. "Each student will be given a ball of clay and a strip of tag paper 6"x2" [stapled into a circle]. The students will roll the clay out to a thickness of not less than 1 inch. Next the student will insert the paper ring so that it forms a seal. The student will select an object he wishes to make into a fossil and press it into the clay. When the student carefully removes the object an imprint is left. At this time the students can review how this might have happened in nature. Since primary students in Oregon are not allowed to work with plaster of paris, when the children go home the molds will be filled. The next morning, after reviewing their chart on fossils, the children may become Paleontologists and "discover" their fossils by removing the circle of paper and clay. They may have the next 5 minutes to share them with their classmates. They will be placed on the activity table until dismissal so the students can examine them during their spare time." Excellent

FOSSILS: UNCOVERING THE FACTS – LESSON PLAN
http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/Lessons.cfm?DocID=94

Many children today can name a dinosaur on sight regardless of how lengthy the name. Students are extremely interested in the topic. These lessons will go beyond naming dinosaurs and give students a broad understanding of how we know about the great beasts. They will start to acquire knowledge of the fossil record in preparation for learning about evolution and natural selection–concepts they will study in high school." Excellent

GETTING INTO THE FOSSIL RECORD – TEACHING MODULE – LEVEL ONE (5-8) LEVEL TWO (9-12)             NEW!
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/education/explorations/tours/fossil/index.html
"The tour begins by introducing the fossil record and different types of fossils. By examining how fossils are formed and the factors that promote or prevent fossilization, students learn that not all types of organisms have an equal chance of becoming a fossil and that fossilization is very rare. The tour then focuses on what happens to a fossil after it is formed and the factors necessary for its discovery, emphasizing the reasons that most organisms will not become part of the fossil record."
Includes lesson plans and handouts. Excellent

HOLLYWOOD DINOSAURS – LESSON PLAN
http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/Lessons.cfm?DocID=128
A lesson plan for grades 6-8 on dinosaur fact and fiction. "In this lesson, students examine characteristics of the scientific process in the study of dinosaurs. Dinosaurs hold a place of awe and wonder for humans; the success of the Jurassic Park movies and books is testament to the fact that these extinct animals fascinate us. However, entertainment has a tendency to misrepresent scientific knowledge and blur the lines between scientific fact and imagination. For most students, dinosaurs are the large, scary animals in the movies. This lesson allows students to differentiate between fact, theory, and speculation as they relate to dinosaurs. Students also make their own theories using relevant evidence, thereby practicing the use of logical reasoning. Finally, students examine recent evidence that challenges the prevailing theory that all dinosaurs were cold-blooded." Excellent

WHAT DID T REX TASTE LIKE? – LEARNING MODULE             NEW!
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/education/explorations/tours/Trex/index.html
"What Did T. rex Taste Like? is an introduction to cladistics, the most commonly used method of classification today. Cladistics organizes living things by common ancestry and evolutionary relationships, enabling us to better understand life's present diversity and evolutionary history. Like other methods of classification, cladistics makes use of the observable features of organisms. Cladistics also allows us to examine the ways in which features change within groups, and to observe patterns of origin and diversification over time. Unlike any other method of classification, cladistics is a powerful predictive tool, allowing us to propose hypotheses about the relationships between organisms. This module presents a simplified version of the process used to generate cladistic analyses and demonstrates its predictive power. Typically dozens or even hundreds of features are examined before a cladogram is produced. Although in this module only structural features are used, true cladistic analyses also use biochemical, genetic and even behavioral features."

DINOSAUR TRACKS: FROM STRIDE TO LEG LENGTH TO SPEED- CLASSROOM ACTIVITY        NEW!
http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/AEPC/WWC/1995/dinotracks.php
A classroom activity for high school science students on calculating the speed of dinosaurs. "During this series of activities, students will determine the relationship between leg length, stride length, and speed in humans and bipedal dinosaurs. Data will be collected and graphed for these human characteristics and analysis of the graphs will show that (1) the longer the leg length, the greater the stride and (2) the greater the relative stride, the greater the speed. These conclusions can be transferred to dinosaur leg length, stride length, and speed since these dinosaurs walked with their feet well under the body like modern mammals and birds. Students will use actual data collected from dinosaur track pads and fossils to interpolate the speed data for bipedal dinosaurs." Very Good

"After tons of research, scientists, or paleontologists, (scientists who study dinosaurs) have found out that dinosaurs went extinct some 64-66 million years ago, but that is the only factual information they could be sure of. There still is a lot more to figure out. There are definite ideas as to what happened, such as disease, the greenhouse effect, a volcano, or maybe it was because of the impact of a giant asteroid! We do not know for sure! So, for our project, we are going to be the heroes and figure out what happened to the dinosaurs so that we can prevent such a huge catastrophic event from happening in the future. Each person on your team will find one piece of the puzzle and then you will put the pieces together to get a better understanding of what happened and eventually come up with "your interpretation of what happened.""
